An Open Letter To My Sis

So you’re a freshman now…

To you, it means you’re growing up. Everything mom says is wrong and the anxiety of feeling left out makes it seem like it’s the end of the world. Your phone being taken away seems as if you’re being sentenced to 10 years in prison and that Victoria’s Secret book bag makes you slightly cooler than the girls without. Boys are the sun and the moon and holding hands in the hallway is what defines your status. Your biggest responsibility is waking up on time for school and praying that the assignment you missed doesn’t show up on progress book.

High School. Where you think life starts, but really the end is just the beginning.

But to me, it just means you’re not that little fourth grader, who got her two front teeth for Christmas, anymore.

And if I could wish anything upon you it would be that you end up loving high school as much as I did.

And if I could wish anything upon myself, it would be that I had a cool, smart, and hilarious older sister to tell me what to expect.

I’m not there anymore to walk to the end of the block and bully people who bullied you. To chase down the kids who stole your bike, or to tell you this won’t matter in 10 years so let it go.

If anyone knows me, they know I am the proudest big sister on the planet and I wouldn’t give you up for the world. And half the reason I don’t want children is that I basically already have a child of my own… You.

However, A long distance relationship is hard and you refuse to answer any of my calls or texts because…well…. you’re Maddy.

If there is anything I would want you to know, whether I’m a 3-hour car ride or a 13-hour flight away, it would be that I’m here.

I’m here for the good days and I’m here for the bad. I’m here when you want to vent about our crazy mom because we both know I get it. I’m here for the breakups, both boyfriend, and best friend. I’m here to tell you repetitively that tennis shoes don’t go with crop tops. I’m here for the bad hair days and I’m here to help it look good. I’m here to cheer you on at track meets and I’m here to tweet you on in dance. I’m here to back you up when you’re right and here to let you know when you’re wrong.

I’m here.

I’m in your corner.

No matter what.

Because you’re my sis.

And honestly, it’s one of the best things about Life.
